ISLE AU HAUT FERRY

ISLE AU HAUT FERRY

Old Quarry is located in Stonington, Maine. We are the gateway to Isle au Haut and the National Park. We have been taking passengers to Isle au Haut for over 20 years. Our passenger vessel can accommodate 19 passengers and is Coast Guard inspected. She has an enclosed cabin if the weather is bad.

If you miss the mailboat/ferry we will take you out to the island at anytime, at your convenience, or if you just want to go out on a very fast boat please give us a call.

We offer daily scheduled trips (See Boat Schedule) as well as a water taxi service to and from Isle au Haut day or night every day. Due to Park regulations we cannot take you to Duck Harbor, but you can hike, bike or kayak there and we can provide you with an awesome mountain bike or a seaworthy kayak. If you are going to walk you will need a good pair of legs. If you are going to kayak you will need a guide or be a proficient paddler.

The island remains largely uninhabited; it is quiet and quaint with few amenities for the tourist. There is a small grocery store (The Island Store) and a take out restaurant which is located next to the store. That’s pretty much it. There are two park restrooms; one at the Ranger Station near the dock and one at Duck Harbor.

Isle au Haut Island Protocols:  Leave no trace principles please. Plan to take ALL your trash with you back to Old Quarry. We will take care of it for you. You must not take anything else back with you from the island like rocks, plants, or animals. Leave everything undisturbed including the local inhabitants. They enjoy their privacy – please respect it. Do not go on private lands. THIS IS A BIG NO-NO. Stay out of their way; don’t slow them down. The dock and the parking lot can be crowded during ferry boat time. Be considerate. Please use the Park facilities. Park rangers are there to help you if you need assistance. Seek them out for hiking advice, medical help, or for anything else when you are in the park.

Please arrive 30 minutes before the departure time.

HIKE & BIKE ISLE AU HAUT

HIKE & BIKE ISLE AU HAUT

Grab a bike and head out to Isle au Haut for a memorable island excursion. Bring your own or rent a mountain bike from Old Quarry and step aboard the Nigh Duck to begin your adventure.

The Nigh Duck will drop you off with a map at the Isle au Haut town landing in the morning and you’ll enjoy peddling on both paved and dirt hilly roads for about three to four miles. You then leave your bike at the trail head and hike Acadia National Park, enjoying spectacular views with the potential of pounding surf against 75 foot cliffs. Hike the shoreline trails and visit old spruce forests. Hop back on your bike for a few more hilly miles, stopping to hike more of the island’s trails and for a break at Long Pond, a mile-long fresh water lake, to go for a swim. Finish off your day by peddling the remaining few hilly miles along a mostly paved road back to the town landing.

The total peddling trip is approximately 12 miles (5 paved and 7 dirt), and there are 18 miles of hiking trails. We suggest going counter clockwise as the hills are easier and ask that you please keep your bikes on the roads and off the hiking trails. What to bring.

The Nigh Duck leaves Old Quarry daily at 9:00 am, reaching the Isle au Haut town landing at 9:45 am. Return from town landing at 4:45 pm and reach Old Quarry at 5:30 pm.

ISLANDS HOURLY SHUTTLE

ISLANDS HOURLY SHUTTLE

Catch the Nigh Duck hourly shuttle to islands in the archipelago. Originally offered for Green Island, shuttle service is now extended to McGlathery Island, Wreck Island, Little Camp Island, and Hell’s Half Acre Island.

Green Island is perhaps the favorite island to visit in the archipelago. It is owned by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust and is open for day use. It is uninhabited. A hundred years ago it was a very active granite quarry. The workers left us a beautiful, scenic, and clean freshwater swimming hole. There is also a wonderful little 20 minute hike through the pristine forest.

This is a great place to chill out and get a taste of the Stonington Islands and the rocky coast of Maine. You can stay from one to about 5 hours on most any day.

Bring your lunch, sun screen, bathing suit, and towel. A cell phone would be good so that you can call for your ride back. You must be able to climb up and down the ladder at the dock. However we can sometimes also land at the rocky beach for you to disembark.

Islands Hourly Shuttle schedule: Trips start at 11:00 am and end by 5:30 pm.

RATES:
$30.00/person/round trip
(2 person minimum or pay $60.00 for one person)
