Island Boat Trips

View of Acadia National Park from Frenchboro IslandThese day long Island Boat Trips are a wonderful way to see the Maine Coast from the water. The beauty of the hundreds of spruce covered and rock bound islands in the Penobscot and Jerico Bays will astound you. There are few places in the world as breathtaking. To make these boat trips even more interesting you will be able to visit a few of these small magical islands where some pretty determined and independent folks live and work.

Many of these people are either lobstermen or folks who have something to do with the fishing industry. Many of them and their families have been on these islands for many generations. There are traditions and a way of life that make for some interesting cultural differences.

In your few hours on these small wonderful islands you will be able to walk or ride a bike through these villages with boats, traps, fishing gear, and lobster shacks, all bunched together. On some of the islands a bike ride will bring you around part, if not all, of the island. This is a good way to see these islands. (We can bring bikes to Vinalhaven, North Haven, Swans, and Isle au Haut. Frenchboro is small enough so that you can walk through the forest paths to the cliffs; bikes are not needed.

For the Isle au Haut trip you will need to bring your lunch. Box lunches, beverages and snacks available at Old Quarry. Please order lunches at least a day ahead. For the other islands you can either bring your lunch or eat at the restaurants or take outs. Some island eateries close down after Labor Day. Please plan accordingly.

The boat rides are from 1 to 1 1/2 hours each way. There is a private head on the boat.

We rent bikes or bring your own.

You get a great and scenic boat ride and a chance to witness island life first hand.

This 985 acre island is a recreational haven that draws nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, picnickers and boaters from all over. It has 7 miles of rocky shore line with two beautiful beaches as well as 10 miles of hiking trails through the island's extensive forests. It offers its visitors a taste of wilderness. Some have said that there are no other islands quite like it on the coast of Maine. Just the beaches themselves are extraordinary.

There will be a MCHT steward to meet you and guide you around the island if you so choose.

Kayak Option:
Paddlers can join this trip one way or round trip. Boat fare is the same. This is a chance to paddle an area that you might otherwise not get a chance to paddle around.
