Meet Capt Bill and The Crew

Capt BillCapt Bill

Born in Boston during a snow storm in 1948. Not educated at Harvard. Worldly none the less.

I moved to the Rockland, Maine area in 1973 from the Boston area. After 5 years in Rockland I moved to Monhegan Island, (I met an awesome woman who lived there) which was home for 15 years. There I lobster fished, did carpentry, and had a bed and breakfast as well as rental cottages.

From there I moved to Stonington, the wonderful woman then left, and so with nothing better to do I built Old Quarry up from nothing. So I am the creator, owner, and operator of this wonderful little business since 1997. People always ask if I had a vision of this. Well no I did not, it was rather a series of small visions, one laid upon the last. Every year I would try to add something that made sense and so far there have been no major catastrophes (knocking on wood). Funny thing is that I also believe that the business survived all these years in spite of me.

I have to say also that I believe that I was put here to run this business. I feel like this is where I am supposed to be, and doing what I am supposed to be doing. It’s all good and I’m a happy camper.

I hope that my customers will be happy campers as well. We work hard to make that happen.

Allison Hermansen

Allison Hermansen

Allison H. is returning for her second year at OQOA. Her friendly face is a common sight on the campgrounds, and you may see her working in the office, teaching sailing lessons, or cooking and cleaning, always with a smile. Allison has been coming to Deer Isle her entire life and has fallen in love with Old Quarry.

David "Hutch" Hutchison

David "Hutch" Hutchison

I love exploring the world from the seat of a kayak and have developed and lead experiences from the Florida Everglades to the coast of Maine. I have almost 20 years leading in the outdoors to add to a handful of certifications in water safety and instruction, but I am most fond of my Maine Guide License. As an outdoor instructor, environmental educator, and freelance writer, I have worked in a variety of settings from university Outdoor Programs to National Parks and outfitters. I have worked in Acadia and North Cascades National Parks as well as volunteered on many organic farms from Maine to Hawaii. Teaching is at the heart of what I do, no matter where I may find myself in a given season.

Esther

Esther

Esther is an avid wanderer who loves hoppin‘ around the islands of Penobscot Bay, be it by kayak, motor boat, sailboat, or row boat. A born islander, Esther now makes her winter home in the mountains of Austria, but she is sure to never miss a summer on the island. Esther moonlights as House Manager at the Stonington Opera House, and likes to spend her precious few moments of freedom singing around the campfire, perfecting the art of the s’more, biking on the back roads of Deer Isle, serving up aces on the tennis court, and swimming in the ocean.

Jordan Garland

Jordan Garland

Jordan has been a crew member at Old Quarry for 3 years. You’ll most commonly see her in the kitchen, frying up burgers and scooping ice cream cones, or hanging around in the office. She is referred to as the “sweetest thing in the whole place” by Captain Bill himself. Sometimes she can be very soft-spoken, but don’t let that fool you, she loves meeting new people and having a good laugh. She has not yet gone to college, but she has big plans to follow her dream of owning a No-Kill Rescue Animal Shelter. She is a huge fan of all things animal. In her free time she likes to capture beautiful scenery with her camera, go for boat rides and watch the sunset. She has lived in Maine her whole life, though she is relatively new to the Stonington area. Old Quarry has become her home away from home.

Shari Galiardi

Shari Galiardi

Since 2012, my husband and I have been traveling, working, and volunteering across North America – adventuring through over 75 national parks, monuments, rivers, and lake/seashores, and volunteering on organic farms from Maine to Hawaii. My favorite days are when I’m backpacking, cycling, or kayaking, as well as capturing Mother Nature’s beauty through the lens of my camera. My love of travel and passion for volunteering has lead me to almost every continent on earth. As a photographer, my desire to capture unique images of our natural world stems from my experience as an educator. Everything I want to share has an educational component embedded within – it is both who I am and how I see the world.
